New Traditional Northumbrian Pipers Marquee dedicated to local Piper
The enchanting sounds of the Northumbrian pipes will once again fill the air at the Northumberland County Show, taking place on Saturday 24th May at Bywell, near Stocksfield. This year’s show will feature a dedicated Northumbrian Pipers marquee, hosting a prestigious competition celebrating the unique musical heritage of the region.
This year’s competition holds particular significance as it is held in loving memory of the esteemed Northumbrian piper, Dave Shaw, from Craghead, who sadly passed away last year. The competition was initiated at the request of Dave’s friend, Terry Forster, and has flourished with the invaluable support of Andrew Davison, Chairman of the Northumbrian Pipers’ Society and co-founder of Magnetic North East.
The Northumbrian Pipers competition will showcase a range of talent across various skill levels, with classes for Beginners, Intermediate, Open, Duet, and a special category for the Best Young Piper.
Adding a deeply personal touch to the event, Dave Shaw’s family have generously donated a beautiful trophy to be awarded to the winner of the Best Young Piper category, encouraging the next generation of pipers. Furthermore, another cherished Northumbrian piper, Lancelot Robson, will be honoured with a trophy for the Beginners category, kindly donated by his son, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire new players.
The distinguished Northumbrian piper and composer, Kathryn Tickell, will preside as the judge for the competition, lending her expertise and renowned ear to the proceedings. Competitors will vie for prize money for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each category, along with commemorative rosettes.
Throughout the afternoon, visitors can look forward to captivating performances from talented Northumbrian pipers, creating a vibrant atmosphere within the marquee.
The Northumbrian Pipers competition at the Northumberland County Show is proudly supported by Hay & Kilner, whose generous sponsorship has been instrumental in making this event possible.
This celebration of traditional Northumbrian music promises to be a highlight of the Northumberland County Show, offering a poignant tribute to beloved figures in the piping community while showcasing the rich talent and enduring appeal of this iconic instrument.
