FARRIERS

FARRIERS

One of the most fascinating and skilful attractions at the Northumberland County Show 2026 returns this year, as the farrier competition showcases the craftsmanship, precision and heritage of this essential rural trade.

Farriery is a highly specialised trade focused on the care of horses’ hooves, combining blacksmithing expertise with a deep understanding of equine health. Competitors in the farrier section will demonstrate their ability to forge, shape and fit horseshoes with accuracy and efficiency—often under time pressure.

The competition typically includes a range of classes for both experienced professionals and apprentices, reflecting the dedication and years of training required to master the craft.

Farriery is one of the oldest trades in agriculture, and its presence at the show highlights the enduring importance of traditional skills in modern farming and equestrian life. Competitions like this not only preserve these techniques but also provide a platform for the next generation of farriers to learn, compete and excel.
